Hughes, Joseph Patrick1309 viewsJoseph Patrick Hughes Dies in Harrison, New Jersey

Baseball Fan, 82, Known as "Judge" was Native of Newark

Joseph Patrick Hughes died yesterday (January 23, 1941), at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William Donnelly of 46 Washington Street, Harrison, with whom he lived.

Mr. Hughes came to Harrison 42 years ago from Newark, where he was born. He had been known as "Judge" Hughes ever since he made his home in town.

The title resulted from Mr. Hughes' election as a justice of peace in 1900. He used to preside at court sessions in a carpenter shop. Five years later he became an election board judge and was judge of the board in the Third Ward's First District 30 years.

Never Missed an Opener
One of Mr. Hughes' proudest boasts was that he never missed an opening game of Newark's baseball team in more than 40 years. He attended last summer's opening game of the Bears. He belonged to Holy Name Society of Holy Cross Church. He was an engineer at Koppers Co., Kearny, several years, retiring seven years ago. Previously he worked at the General Electric Works. Harrison.

Mr. Hughes leaves a son, Joseph Hughes of Harrison, clerk of the works at Harrison Housing Authority's project; two daughters, Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Lillian McCloskey of Irvington; four sisters, Mrs. Anna McGill of Harrison, Mrs. Alice Straway of Newark, Mrs. Theresa Malague and Mrs. Elizabeth Reilly of Nutley; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be from Condon Memorial Home, 210 Davis Avenue, Harrison, with a requiem mass at Holy Cross Church at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Holy Sepulcher [sic] Cemetery, East Orange.

Eisel, Henry & Amanda1109 viewsWedding picture of my great-grandparents Henry and Amanda Eisel, born Redmer. It was taken in a Photo Studio in Newark about 1899/1900. Maybe my great-grandfather Henry Eisel was in 1920 the owner of the Eisel Building 653 Broad Street in Newark. He emigrated in 1896 from Germany to New Jersey. I would like to know more about the wedding picture and the Eisel Building. Who has more information? Please contact me: Sonja Dembeck from Germany, e-mail: sonjdemb@gmail.com

Petillo, Mary1109 viewsMary Petillo, forelady of a Newark, New Jersey factory making lamp bulbs and tubes for the Signal Corps, is an active member of her plant's laboratory management committee. The committee, set up in cooperation with the War Production Board's drive to speed victory, was elected in Mary's plant from a personnel of 1700, 350 of them men. Vice-president of her local, United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, Congress of Industrial Organization, Mary achieved the job of forelady by working working as a hand at many varied operations. She has made a suggestion to conserve bakelite lamp bases formerly discarded--a suggestion now in use at the plant--and is also the inventor of an apparatus which prevents short-circuiting during tests of lamps

Roth, Richard1080 viewsMy father, Richard N. Roth (1922-2011) was raised in the Weeqhahic Section and lived in Newark until 1953, when he relocated to Hillside.

My mother’s father operated a trucking business in Newark which was established around 1930 on Morris Ave and later relocated to the corner of 12th St. and 13th Ave. My Dad assumed ownership in 1959 when my grandfather passed away. The firm remained in Newark until well after the riots. My grandfather was also a co-owner of the E & A Bus Company, which operated the #32 bus (South Orange Independent Line) that ran up South Orange Avenue.

My other Grandfather, Jacob Roth, also a Newark resident for much of his life, ran a butcher shop.

The above photo is of my father in front of the Billiard Academy at 25 Banta Place, Hackensack.

1058 viewsBefore 1923, a girl of 13 working at embroidery in a far corner of a dimly lighted room. The light came from a small gas jet which was high above the girl's head, in the center of the room. She was working on a black dress which was outlined in black pencil. For this dress elaborately embroidered, she received ninety cents. She could embroider one dress in about three or four days if she kept at it steadily. She had been working since 4 P.M., and it was the 7 P.M. She expected to stop at 10:30. Location: Newark, New Jersey.
